Proposing Website Costs and Timelines with Integrity

When a potential client asks me, “How much and how long?” a million questions start rushing to my head. A seemingly obvious thing to do first is to figure out what exactly it is that they want; however, that’s very rarely well defined. Let’s assume though that you have at least a decent idea of what it is that they want, estimating the costs involved is such a delicate balance.

Create your own Idea Group

During these tough financial times I have found myself and others looking for new ways to make money. My friends and I have put together these bi-weekly think tanks of ideas that we would be able to do on the side and start making some of that extra money. Though, none of the money I receive now is extra.

Here are a few steps to get your idea group off the ground.

  • Do what you’re passionate about: what are you collectively passionate about? Are your motivations philanthropic or profit driven? There are a lot of people to help out there now and some amazing opportunities.
  • Have a central meeting place and set time that you adhere to every time. We meet every other week at a central location that provides a computer and a projector to do immediate research on idea’s that might come up.
  • Set ground rules This is something that should be taken very seriously. There could be financial penalties or maybe the person that isn’t able to show up brings beers to the next meeting. No such thing as a bad idea, so on and so forth. (continue reading…)

Some Thoughts on Prototyping

Imagine if you will folks an application that searches your refrigerator automagically knows the items that you usually buy and what you are currently missing. While you are in the vicinity of your local market, the fridge alerts your phone that you are out of milk and within a mile of the grocery store. This might actually be a product, but lets say its not for argument sake. Pretty darn cool but unfortunately the person who has this idea has no idea how to start seeing this through to fruition.

As the economy continues to trend downward and people are losing their jobs, we see this increase in entrepreneurs finally being able to pursue their big idea’s. (continue reading…)
