Some Thoughts on Prototyping

the chicken or the egg

Imagine if you will folks an application that searches your refrigerator automagically knows the items that you usually buy and what you are currently missing. While you are in the vicinity of your local market, the fridge alerts your phone that you are out of milk and within a mile of the grocery store. This might actually be a product, but lets say its not for argument sake. Pretty darn cool but unfortunately the person who has this idea has no idea how to start seeing this through to fruition.

As the economy continues to trend downward and people are losing their jobs, we see this increase in entrepreneurs finally being able to pursue their big idea’s. Getting funding and building the product is such “the chicken or the egg” scenario that it puts an idea in jeopardy before it even has a chance.

  • “Do I go to VC’s for funding or fund it myself?”
  • “Should I be hiring some developers or offshore it?”
  • ” Have I done enough research on what it is going to take to make this happen”
  • So on and so forth

Prototyping has the right balance of risk and work to bring an idea to life without actually having it live just yet. It’s not as risky, costly, and time consuming as just building the product and trying to sell it. Plus, you wouldn’t be starting your pitches with, “Imagine if you will…”.
